I have found a bug with the NPC's and the way minecraft handles damage with weapons/tools. If you attack an NPC the durability of the item you used will appear to go down and if you do it long enough the item will actually break. However if you do not break your item and try to repair it at the blacksmith he will tell you its already fully repaired. This has something to do with how minecraft handles damage on items. When you attack the NPC your durability will break the item if you keep at it long enough, however if you stop before breaking the item and use it on the target it was meant for you will see the item refresh and the durability go back to its real level. Then you can repair at the blacksmiths. I am aware of this issue however I do not think I can fix it at this time since I believe the issue is coded into minecraft. To avoid this, just don't attack the NPC's. Or don't attack them long enough to have your item break.
